Authentic Lancia Series 1 Fulvia :

If you are interested in a Fulvia, the Series 1 is the one to get. These were built from 1966 through 1969, before the Fiat take over, and were built in the "Lancia way" of doing things. Lancia was known for over engineering and over building their cars, which is one of the reasons why the company did not survive financially.

Series 1 Fulvias feature a peppy V4 front wheel drive engine and 4-speed gearbox, which Italians refer to as “the leva longa" (long lever) and is a joy to shift. Notably better than the Fiat 5-speed gearbox that was installed in the Series 2 cars.

BREIF MODEL HISTORY

The Fulvia series premiered in 1963 with the introduction of the Fulvia Berlina 4-door sedan.  The production versions of the Fulvia - named for Via Fulvia, the Roman road leading from Tortona to Turin - included the 2+2 Coupe, a Zagato designed fastback GT and a 4-door Berlina.  Lancia marketing included offering many trim and engine variations to suit Italy’s licensing and tax regulations and the popular taste.  The Fulvia Coupe was a compact two-door, three-box coupé introduced in 1965, designed in-house by Piero Castagnero.

Lancia promoted the new Fulvia by returning to rally competition with suitably modified versions.  In 1965 the Fulvia Coupe made its racing debut at the Tour de Corse, placing 8th overall.  Starting with the lightened and more powerful 1965 Rallye HF, special HF versions were added to the lineup offered to the general public to homologate improvements for the rally cars.

The Fulvia Coupe was produced from 1965 thru 1976 and the model evolved thru two series.  The original 1091 cc V4 was enlarged to 1298 cc.  Series l was produced from 1965 thru 1970, Series 2 from 1971 thru 1976.  The Fulvia is best known for its rallying pedigree. It achieved significant success in motorsports, notably winning the International Rally Championship in 1972, cementing its place in automotive history.

Tested in 1967, Road & Track reviewed the Lancia Coupe as ”a precision motorcar, an engineering tour de force".  Proven in competition and noted for a superb driving experience, the Fulvia Coupe is very well regarded by contemporary enthusiasts and a sought after collectable in today’s market.
